Thanks for stopping by!
As you are probably aware, I will be off to Quito in the new year. Here's some more information to get you caught-up:
CAMTA - Canadian Association of Medical Teams Abroad - has been traveling to Ecuador for the past 11 years. Each year, a team of pediatric and adult orthopedic surgeons, anesthetists, physiotherapists, OR and ward nurses, residents, nursing and medical students, lay people, and translators volunteer their time and skill at the Un Canto a La Vida Hospital in Quito. For 10 days, the team works non-stop to perform total joint replacements on the adult population, and to correct club feet and hip dislocations in the pediatric population. During the mission, at least 80 surgeries will be performed.
There is only 1 nursing student position on each team - I am very fortunate to have been chosen to join CAMTA, and feel very honored to be part of the mission. My role will be to work directly with the patients as they prepare and recover from surgery, as well as helping out wherever necessary.
What is perhaps the most amazing feature of this mission is that every citizen undergoing surgery does not have to pay a single penny. In Quito, the cost of a replacement surgery is equivalent to an entire year's worth of earnings. This is where you come in: your contribution aids the team in countless ways. It can make a very real difference in someone's life. More specifically, the difference between being mobile and able to work - or not. The difference between being able to play in the playground - or not.
Every individual needs to meet a fundraising goal of $2,500. The money raised goes towards traveling, accommodations, and transporting medical equipment. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated!
Donations can be made in two ways.
1) Addressed and payable to CAMTA
Please specify that you are supporting my individual fundraising efforts!
